Supplemental Outreach Initiatives

Scholarship Program

The Stations sponsor the Sandusky Radio Scholarship program at Green River Community College in Auburn, Washington.  The annual scholarship was $2,500 in 2009. The GRCC Board of Directors, using the following criteria, awards the scholarship: 

 

A second year GRCC student enrolled in the radio broadcasting program

 

Have a minimum 2.8 cumulative GPA

 

Display merit and need

 

Display a motivation to continue their education

2009's recipient, Jessica Carr received the award at the Annual Awards Banquet in August 2009.

 

The Stations also sponsor a scholarship at Bellevue Community College, Bellevue, Washington.  This scholarship is in the amount of $2,500.  The criteria to be eligible for the scholarship are:

 

Must be enrolled in BCC's Radio Broadcasting program

 

Must demonstrate a need for financial assistance

 

Must be a full-time student

 

Must provide two letters of recommendation

2008's scholarship has not been awarded as no applicants were received.  It will be re-opened in the Fall 2009.

 

KWJZ-FM is a prime sponsor of the Northwest Asian Weekly Foundation 2009 Diversity Scholarship Banquet which "celebrates young people who reach across cultural lines." 

 

As members of the Washington State Association of Broadcasters, the Stations are sponsors of the WSAB Scholarship which was awarded to Yuri Jung in January 2009 at the Edward R. Murrow School of Communication at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington.  Each year WSAB presents scholarships to students attending the Murrow School.  Scholarships are awarded to students meeting the following criteria:

Must demonstrate a sincere interest in broadcasting

Must Intend to enter the field professionally

Must have talent and potential in broadcasting

Requires high levels of character and personality; academic scholarship; and a financial need.

 

 

Internship Program

The Stations have internship programs available in Promotions, Programming, Production/News, Computer/Networking, and Sales.  Local colleges, community colleges, and high schools have provided us with unpaid interns, who receive college/class credit for their service.  

Staff members frequently speak to communication/broadcast classes at community colleges to educate them about radio career opportunities and internships. 

During the period of October 1, 2008 through September 30, 2009 we accepted interns from the following schools:  University of Arkansas (1), Arizona State University (2), BC Institute of Technology (1), Bellevue Community College (4), Edmonds Community College (1), Evergreen State College (1), Northwest University (1), Seattle Central Community College (1), Seattle Pacific University (1), Seattle University (1), University of Washington (9), Washington State University (1), Western Washington University (1).

Job Fairs

During 2009 the stations participated in career fairs in the community:

 


University of Washington Bothell Career Fair, UW at Bothell.  Department Heads that participated were Laura Dane, Program Director KRWM; and Taylor Westphall, Promotion Coordinator KKNW/KWJZ and Ryan Digges, Promotion Coordinator KQMV/KIXI. Staff members talked with job applicants about current openings and internships, as well as handing out flyers about the openings.  Interviewed 28 candidates.

 


October 22, 2008

January 21, 2009

 

Seattle Pacific University Job/Intern Fair, Seattle Pacific University.  This is an annual event attended by students seeking internships.  Department Heads that participated were Cindy Gilsdorf, Promotion Director KKNW/KWJZ; and Hillary Ison, Promotion Coordinator KKWN/KWJZ.  Staff members talked with job applicants about internships as well as handing out flyers about the openings.

University of Washington Seattle Spring Career Fair, Husky Union Building, Seattle, WA. Sandusky Radio participated in this job fair.  This event offers employers a chance to meet and recruit prospective employees and provide veterans from the armed services with information about opportunities with organizations.  Department Heads that participated were Erik Krema, Sales Manager KKNW; Susan Dingethal, Director of New Media; Annie O'Dell, Promotion Director KQMV/KIXI; Ryan Digges, Promotion Coordinator KQMV/KIXI; Dan Murphy, Operations Manager KIXI.  Staff members talked with over 70 applicants about current openings, as well as handing out flyers about the openings.

Bellevue Community College Internship Fair, Bellevue Community College, Bellevue WA.  Sandusky Radio participated in this internship fair. This is an annual event attended by students seeking internships.  Attending on behalf of our group was Hilary Ison, Promotion Coordinator KKNW/KWJZ; Ryan Digges, Promotion Coordinator KQMV/KIXI; and Jennifer Taniguchi, Promotion Coordinator KRWM.

Other Venues of Outreach

 

Lake Washington School District No. 414 – Ashley Waddleton of Inglewood Junior High School in the Lake Washington School District spent the day job shadowing the KRWM Programming, Promotions, Sales and Traffic departments for her Humanities class.  The point of this project is to explore a career that interests the student.  Ashley was required to visit someone doing the job she wanted to explore, and create a formal write-up of the visit with some reflection on what she learned by seeing the job up close.  She spent time with Daryl Summers, Midday On-Air Personality; Kendra Carter, Promotion Director; Jennifer Taniguchi, Promotion Coordinator; Erik Prill, Production Director; Allison Magney, Account Executive; Sigrid Gatens, Billing Clerk & Graphic Designer; and Cindy Martin, Traffic Manager.

 

 

Green River Community College – November 10, 2008, Marc Kaye, VP/General Manager spoke to the Introduction to Broadcasting class.  During his visit he spoke to the class about the business of Broadcasting.  Director of Broadcast Operations/Instructor, Tom Evans Krause made the arrangements for us to speak.

 

 

Boy Scouts of America –A tour for scouts for those young people earning communication merit badges during the fall and spring.  A troops of cub scouts and tiger scouts scheduled tours to see our studios and learn about broadcasting. (Ryan Digges, Promotion Coordinator KQMV/KIXI; Annie O'Dell, Promotion Director KQMV/KIXI; and Cindy Gilsdorf, Promotion Director KKNW/KWJZ). Excellent community relations and educational for future broadcasters.

 

 

Alki Community Center – a group of young people toured our facility on July 21, 2009 during their "Music Discovery Week" to learn how music gets picked and played on the radio, as well as seeing how the studios worked.  Another excellent opportunity for future broadcasters.

 

 

 

 

University of Washington – Masters of Communication in Digital Media (MCDM) program – July 28, 2009 Brian Westbrook, New Media Director spoke with a group of graduate students studying social media, communications and journalism in a course entitled, "Beyond the Fail Whale: How Twitter is Changing Organizations".  The conversation covered how media is used in broadcasting, what we have learned and more about the broadcast business.  Course focuses on using Twitter as a social media strategy, specifically in media/broadcasting.

 

 

Jackson Street Music Program – A Non-profit organization in Seattle whose goal it is to inspire youths' creativity as well as their social and cultural productivity through the art of music.  JSMP partners and works in conjunction with Seattle's arts and education communities.  JSMP participants actively engage in conversation with artists and educators.  They then use their creative and critical thinking skills to provide a written reflection of their experience.  Sandusky Radio has been a supporter of the program by publicizing fundraising activities of the organization and it has been a past recipient of the proceeds from the KWJZ Benefit CD sampler. - Marc Kaye addressed the students and parents on Thursday, August 27 at the MBA closing breakfast at Seattle University.
